Fairness Doctrine...seriously?

Hi everyone. Okay, y'all know I get on my soapbox every once in awhile. Some time has passed since my last political blog, and after doing a little research I just had to put my two cents in. Fairness Doctrine...Some Democrats in government continue to amaze me with their absolute hypocrisy. The short of it is that there is a Democratic effort to regulate talk radio by reviving rules to balance conservative hosts/views with liberal hosts/views in the name of "fairness." According to the ACLJ.org website, the Fairness Doctrine was a rule that "in theory would enhance political discourse by requiring television and radio broadacast stations to provide "fair" coverage of controversial issues of public importance." In reality, it did the exact opposite and after 40 years was found to “inhibit the
presentation of controversial issues of public importance . . . impede the public’s access to the marketplace of ideas and poses an unwarranted intrusion upon the journalistic freedom of broadcasters." (Visit the ACLJ.org website to sign a petition to stop this nonsense.)

After the Fairness Doctrine ceased to apply, conservative radio exploded and is all over the airwaves today. Broadcasting companies are out to make money...the more people that listen to a program, the more advertisers want to advertise on the station, leading to more money being made by the broadcasting companies. The fact of the matter is, the conservative shows simply have more listeners and supporters; a fact which the liberals are unhappy with, hence the "Fairness Doctrine" being revisited. There have been and are liberal shows...they just don't have the following the conservative programs have.

Isn't this the country obsessed with FREEDOM OF SPEECH and TOLERANCE? You hear it all of the time from the liberal left. The liberal left is always harping on how conservatives are trying to repress the American people's words and actions with our "bigoted and narrow-minded views." Little children in schools are being force-fed the idea of "tolerance," which the liberals take to mean that everyone must not just tolerate the liberal views that go so strongly against our beliefs (homosexuality, abortion, etc.), but they must agree that someone's given views is okay...one almost has to agree with something that goes against their beliefs in an effort not to be labeled a bigot or narrow-minded religious nut. Don't get me wrong, I am all for the true definition of tolerance...for example, gay marriage...despite what liberals would have us believe, it is okay not the support the idea that this lifestyle is a natural and acceptable way to live. Is it okay for people to beat up on gay people or use hate as a weapon against gay people? Absolutely not! The liberals wants the American people to accept that "being gay is not a choice or sin," and for those of us who feel that it most certainly is; we are labeled "intolerant." (In)tolerant is the one of the most abused words in the English language.

Okay, so how does this apply to the Fairness Doctrine? If the liberals are so supportive of "free speech" and "tolerance," how do they balance the fact that what they are trying to do betrays both ideas? The Democrat leaders supporting this don't like the idea of the masses listening to broadcasts that don't support their agenda. Plain and simple. I had a term for this in my Kindergarten class, and it was "sore loser." The liberal radio broadcasts just aren't being as heavily supported as the conservatives, and the liberals feel threatened. Last I checked, we are a free country. People should be free to make their own choices...that goes for religion and lifestyle choices, what forms of media to take in, etc. Do I like Howard Stern? Absolutely not...I find him vulgar, filthy, and disgusting. Does he have a right to voice his opinion. Absolutely. Does everyone agree with conservative views? No. Do those conservative views have the right to be expressed without government intervention? Yes.
